WORLD NO-SMOKING DAY
More than 5.4 million deaths worldwide annually are caused by the use of tobacco products. For this reason, World No -Tobacco Day was created in 1988. It was established by WHO, the World Health Organization.
Its main aim is that smokers will be encouraged to avoid the use of tobacco for a full 24 hours. A further important goal is that awareness of the negative health effects of smoking will be increased. People dedicated to this cause hope to help people with a desire to quit smoking It is said that a high number of smokers stop smoking for good on this day each year.
The WHO originally wanted this day to be observed on 7th April, 1987, on the 40th anniversary of the founding of WHO.
However, this date was postponed by WHO, and a resolution was then passed for it to be observed on 31st May every year around the world.
It was first met with both enthusiasm and resistance by smokers, public health organizations and even governments.
